Every two years, something special happens. You remember last winter, in Vancouver, when Canada placed first for gold medal wins. What did you feel? Pride. For our nation, our athletes, and ourselves, it was a grand spectacle for all Canadians. So wear your pride on your coat, sweater, or sleeve.
The Olympics are an iconic event. The athletes are upheld in that reverent, awe-inspiring position on the podium that somehow makes the clothing he or she is wearing seem impossibly distant. It’s as if they are as untouchable as our Olympic athletes are at their events. And maybe that’s the connotation we have: that Olympic clothing is either only for our athletes or only for wearing to represent both our pride in them and our nation. But with London 2012 just around the corner, these new items will help unite us with our athletes and our country.
To wear what our country’s best athletes wear is one of the ways in which that clothing transcends from the stage to our everyday life. We always have time to be proud, and there’s nothing impossible about wearing wool-knit sweaters, hoodies, coats, and t-shirts. They’re fixtures in our closet from Monday to Sunday like any other piece of clothing. You’ve worn them since you were old enough to feel the crisp fall air burning your cheeks, to hear the sound of skates cutting frozen ponds, and to see the snow touching your ankles.
When you walk on the sidewalk, think about how the brown, yellow, and red leaves from the passing trees create a heady mosaic that punctuates the cement, ensnaring your eyes and enveloping you world. Take a closer look and you may come across that same symbolic red maple leaf at the toe of your boot that’s on the sleeve of our sweaters. The red maple leaf has come to symbolize both our pride in our Canadian athletes and the people who appreciate the importance of functional fall and winter clothing. By Dave Synyard.
